Square-Enix has released a new promotional video for Final Fantasy XIII on the Square-Enix mobile channel. The video was shown at a private event and has now been publishes to Square-Enix's mobile channel. Unfortunately it's only available to people with a FOMA 905i series phone in Japan so it seems unlikely we'll be seeing it. Of course it's always possible someone will get a hold of it. Let's hope so anyway.

At this years Game Developer's Conference, Isamu Kamikokuryo disscussed the process in creating art for the Final Fantasy titles by awnsering questions from a crowded panel.
He began by disscussing how he came by getting his job at Square Enix, then breifly moved onto the High quality graphic's Square Enix are able to produce within it's pre-rendered movies. Asked by how the team deals with the 'uncanny valley problem' Kamikokuryo replied, "In terms of the uncanny valley, that is something we have to fight against. We can't go there - that's basically how we feel about it. For all the things we create, many of the section creators get together and we make adjustments so this uncanny valley phenomenon doesn't happen. We don't usually use that phrase, because all the staff has this in mind while we do our work."
Other questions involved the series Progression and stylization of games where Kamikokuryo noted, "For example, we want to emphasize coolness and cuteness through stylization. If you look at the characters from Disney or Pixar, they're not trying to make it too real. But the audience can get the theme from those films more directly due to the stylization."
Once the Q&A was finished, a Final Fantasy XIII trailer was shown, and by starting the presentation Kamikokuryo tried to sum up the Plot of Final Fantasy XIII without giving to much detail, but all his translator could summarize was "characters have to fight against the world... the world of enemies."
Next was a showcase of concept art from the hopful RPG for PS3, showcasing a stunning arrangement of environments such as Cocoon, a giant green planet shrouded by clouds, Pulse a lush and filled jungle environment. There where also art of beautiful vehicles and airships which are apprently available within the game, and also 'insect-like green hovering autobikes, with nymph-like creatures riding them' which was the most intriguing of them all.
The slideshow ended, completing the presentation. This may be the hopeful sign that all fans have been waiting for, in that more information will be coming shortly from Square Enix.
Thanks to Ginryuu for informing us.

After saying the rumors going round about Final Fantasy XIII seeing a release in 2008 were dismissed by Square-Enix officially, Japanese analysts are saying they don't think that Final Fantasy XIII will release until Spring 2010, according to Kotaku.com.
These claims are based on "no news from the company" about the game. Trailers for both Final Fantasy XIII and Final Fantasy Versus XIII has been shown at every TGS and Jump Festa event since the games' announcements. They may not be public, but they are being shown. Not sure how that clarifies as "no news".
However, as always with analysts they often don't know what they're talking about or are making wild claims based on very little fact. Only time will tell as Square Enix are yet to mention an official release date, but don't get all upset, because the game releasing as late as 2010 is quite unlikely.

In an interview with Nikkeibp.co.jp, Yoichi Wada, CEO of Square-Enix has said that "Dragon Quest IX, and the FFXIII are going to be released in the same fiscal year if possible." Dragon Quest IX was delayed from 2007 to 2008 last August by Square-Enix to make improvements to the game so if what he says is true, it is possible that Final Fantasy XIII could see a release in 2008 or early 2009. He doesn't specify which region the release date is concerning but it's most likely Japan. Let's see them pull that off.
Yoichi Wada, even though he may be the head of Square-Enix does have a history for either making mistakes or making false promises in his interviews so don't take this by any means as confirmed.
UPDATE: The above was a mistaken machine translation. Yoichi Wada was actually responding to a question about the likelihood of Dragon Quest IX and FFXIII coming out in the same fiscal year and the effects it would have on Square-Enix stocks and such. Here is a full translation of this portion of the interview:
Interviewer: What are the possibilities that Dragon Quest IX and FFXIII will be released in the same fiscal year? If that happened, then the sales from the fiscal year compared to before and after would be greater, and stock prices, etc., would be affected, too, wouldn't they?
Yoichi Wada: Certainly, if these two titles are released at the same time, one would expect sales to go up, but I'm not sure that that would affect stock prices, because the business is a continuous one. It would be a strange thing if stock prices were moved depending on whether large titles were released on the 31st of March or the 1st of April, wouldn't it?
I think that it is necessary to have a construction where the sales and profits do not fluctuate greatly from year to year. This is because inevitably, there is fluctuation within the home entertainment section of the game industry. In addition to home entertainment games, amusement and publication business is being strengthened, and those will serve as a support, as we are aiming for a solid business structure. As for Taito, within two years, the ordinary profit is projected to be ten billion yen.

Next month's issue of Play will feature more information on Final Fantasy XIII. This will most probably be the same basic information that the Japanese Famitsu and V-Jump magazine scans provided, but will hopefully be a bit more understandable and explain the Farushi/Falsh and Rushi/Luci concept in a bit more detail, even though we pretty much has the jist of it. Check back here and we'll have the scans as soon as possible.
The Farushi and Rushi concept is basically this; a powerful entity, "The Farushi(Falsh)", is the original creator of Cocoon which designed it to protect Pulses people from the threats of "infection" on Pulse, the planet below. Think of it like our Planet Earth being infected, and a superhuman entity creating the moon, or another planet nearby for people to live on avoid the infection. Rushi is the name given to people sent by this entity to carry out some kind of mission. Rushi/Luci are not names of people. Both the Pigtail girl and the Blonde man are Rushi/Luci. Hopefully Play will have official information along with a clearer, officially explanation.

Thanks to Cathryn for bringing this to our attention and providing the image.

Square Enix have "issued a statement" on the rumors about Final Fantasy XIII officially releasing in 2008, reading:
"Although information regarding the release date of FINAL FANTASY XIII has been reported by certain videogame websites, Square Enix itself has yet to make an official statement on this topic. Any reports of a confirmed release date are erroneous and should be disregarded. Square Enix will make an official announcement in the future concerning the release date when it has been determined."
Even though I don't believe this is an official statement it's right in saying the reports of a confirmed release date should be ignored completely as we earlier explained.
Update: Looks as though it's official.

After the new Famitsu scans were released, we got the exciting news that Toriyama is hoping to give the fans a glimpse of the game in the form of a demo sometime this year. He also stated that 2008 will be the year that we finally get solid details on Final Fantasy XIII and Final Fantasy Versus XIII.
Somehow down the line this is been misinterpreted by many game sites, specifically Joystiq, that Tetsuya Nomura (Character designer) has promised the game will release in 2008. This, infact, is rather wrong. First, it's isnt even Nomura speaking, it's Motomu Toriyama, the games director. Instead he says that he hopes he can show the public a demo of Final Fantasy XIII this year. This is neither a promise or a release date. Another site Gamernode also makes an even worse mistake by publishing that Nomura stated this in an interview with Joystiq, which again is wrong because all the information comes from the new Famitsu scans.
Joystiq go on to say that Nomura has also promised a demo for the Playstation Network "a while before the games release", which is also false. Again, Nomura isn't even mentioned in the article and the Playstation Network isn't mentioned once. There might well be a demo on the Playstation Network at some point, but this article certainly does not confirm it for this year.
This has of course lead to "FFXIII IN 2008 OFFICIAL CONFIRMED!!" and "PSN DEMO OF FFXIII CONFIRMED!" which is going to leave a lot of people disapointed. By no means will Final Fantasy XIII "never" come out in 2008, it just hasn't been stated or even nearly officially confirmed at this time.
Check out our site translator's translation of the articles here, as well as the translated scans and original scans (If you can read Japanese) in our gallery.

A few details are emerging from people who have read the latest issue of Famitsu (which is yet to be released officially) including a good explanation of the background story in Final Fantasy XIII. Motomu Toriyama, the games director also comments on the year ahead and the possibility of a playable demo sometime this year.
The blue sphere seen in previous scans has been confirmed to be the floating city Cocoon. Cocoon was built by a superhuman entity called Farushi/Falsh (ファルシ) to protect people from the threats of Pulse. People chosen by Farushi/Falsh to carry out some kind of mission are called Rushi/Luci (ルシ). Both the Blond haired man and Pigtailed girl are Rushi/Luci. Summons come to the aid of the Rushi/Luci and appear in "digital form". The entity that built Cocoon is not the Crystal.
Toriyama says that the games theme is "determination" and that he'd like to give players the chance to play a demo of the game in 2008. It's unsure whether he means a demo at a games convention or a public release.
Thanks BlankChocobo for the translations so far!

The latest issue of PSW contains a list of 50 of the most anticipated games of 2008, and Final Fantasy XIII comes in at number 9 with no mention of Final Fantasy Versus XIII.
The article doesn't really give us much new except one small paragraph which caught my attention:
"Cocoon's government is using crystals with the power to change man's destiny to force those on Pulse to work against their will. In turn, the citizens of Pulse are rebelling. Their force is lead by the only confirmed character so far who goes by the codename "Lightning". Apparently the player won't know if he's on Lightning's side or not until a certain point in the game."
So it looks as though Lightning will be leading a rebel faction against the government, and you wont know if she's doing the "right" thing until later on in the game. Sounds like a welcome change from "all we need is the power of friendship!".

This years Final Fantasy XIII Jump Festa trailer was shown today (in the Closed Mega Theatre) and is once again an extension of all previous FFXIII trailers featuring new scenes mixed in with old ones. Thanks to FF&KH Blog we have a brief summary of what happens in Final Fantasy XIII's newest trailer. Some details may be updated.
This time, the trailer features a new song. The train scene from the E3 2006 and CLOUD DVD is extended. The scene with the Blonde man on the motorcycle is extended to show him summoning Shiva. The Pig tailed girl from the TGS trailer in September appears in this trailer. We now know she has green eyes. From their trailer report, FF&KH Blog believe she summons Carbuncle (the GF from FFVIII and Summon from other titles). Cocoon is possibly 13 centuries old or was maybe built in the 13th century, the translation is unclear. Another woman appears in the trailer who is described as not looking human. She uses a harp and the descriptions sounds like she could be another summon, possibly Siren. After the Final Fantasy XIII logo appears, an "Only for Playstation 3" message is displayed.
We'll keep you updated with any new information we recieve.
