Rumors haven't exactly had the best track record lately, but it's not as though this place is lousy with news so I thought, hey, why not? There's no such thing as a trustworthy source when it comes to anything labeled as a rumor, but if this is accurate it has some interesting implications.
First, we could see the next Final Fantasy within this generation. It would have been in full production for a very long time already. Could S-E really be shooting for more reasonable release windows? If you ask me, that sort of notion is enough to make anyone skeptical of this rumor right there. That's just not the sort of improvement we see from S-E.
But if this does hold any kernel of truth, it means that the 25th anniversary event Square is holding at the end of August is much bigger than I thought. They're supposed to announce the continuation of XIII there- and indeed I thought that was all the event was for- but this could be huge. I had somewhat given up on them properly commemorating it at all.
Thoughts?

I'd like for them to announce FFXV and for most of those rumored tidbits to pan out. And I'd like them to admit that the XIII saga was shit overall and that they're moving on. So naturally, they won't and instead will announce XIII-3 and act as if people care.
To comment on the specific points raised in that link, that sounds like something I'd be into. It's almost suspiciously tailored to me, in fact. I like VI, IX and XII. Square Enix isn't actually allowed to do me any favours, so I have to doubt the veracity of these rumours simply because I would totally be fucking down for this.

Sounds too good to be true, considering Square's recent track record. If by the off chance these claims are indeed valid, I just might be, dare I say, excited for this project. Just so long as Toriyama is kept at least 10ft. away from the dev team.

Sorry, but i am here to ruin the party.
This rumor began at least a week ago and was already debunked,if thats the right word to use here since English is not my strong point.
Seems like that gamefaqs user named Galvanization or something was the one starting this fake rumor.
He is apparently known at gamefaqs for being annoying, stupid and a huge fanboy of Hiroyuki Ito (He also LOVES Vargrant Story with a passion).
He has been making the same threads on gamefaqs over and over for months now, making up theories for XV and claiming that Ito MUST be the director of XV because he has been MIA since 2009 and also he directed the last FF of the ps1 and ps2 generation so he believes that this must be the case for PS3 too.
A Gamesmaster UK magazine editor or something made a post on Gaf and on another forum and said that everything about this rumor is fake.
I got all that in the past few days while reading on the Versus XIII bullshit rumor that was going around.
I saw the XV rumor then did a bit of research on that Galvshit guy.
You can read some of his threads just by googling his name, its a good way to have some laughs.
Also here is the post made by the editor.
Spoiler:
And that's where I stopped reading. As GamesMaster's Dep Ed I can safely say this is utter BS. Tracked down the source - a forum user on GameFAQS and Gamespot - who claims to have read this in our latest issue at the supermarket. There's no such thing in there at all.
Sorry.
(The issue's freakin' brilliant though, fwiw. Highlight: a 16-page Fighting Fantasy-esque Choose Your Own Adventure based on a Hitman: Absolution level...)
In my opinion, even though this was a fake rumor,i believe the guy was right to think, that Final Fantasy XV is already in development and that Ito is the one directing it.
Ito has indeed been MIA since way back and last we heard of him he was working on a large scale project.
Kitase has confirmed that Ito is still working at SE,so i dont think SE has any other "large scale projects" except a new Final Fantasy or a new DQ/Kh game.
Also it is indeed true that there is a pattern here.
Ito directed the last final fantasy of every generation since FFVI,which was also the 3rd final fantasy of that generation just like IX and XII.
So we already got XIII and XIV and the next one is XV,the third numbered FF of the generation and probably the last.
