Something instrumental with no vocals. I hadn't liked any of the theme songs before My Hands. Failing that something English.
I see where you are coming from...
I personally though wouldn't mind something similar to "Eye on me"...A theme song presented by instruments only, which slowly as the game developes goes into full theme with vocal...But without any j-pop feeling to it...
Something that leads and feels like it can represent what the game is trying to tell.
In that sense if FF8 was about love I think "Eyes on Me" did amazing job...
I can't name anyone in paticular (artist) but I hope they won't do 2 seperate version for eastern and western audience.
I don't like any theme song except from My Hands, so I'd love if they chose something similar to that - or change it for the western release. Kiss me goodbye was ok, but the rest were pretty awful.
It's not a big deal though, if they use it only for the ending like in FFXII and FFXIII it certanly won't ruin the game experience.
I just hope its something relevant to the game.
I thought My Hands was a great song and I like Leona Lewis; I just found it irrelevant. That is unless the song selection was inspired by Fang and Vanille's story. Kimi ga Iru, which I felt to be inferior to My Hands, at least made more sense in context.
Oh, and I liked Serah's theme somewhat. I think it was the true theme song of the game, wasn't it? A perfect fit.
I pretty much liked the vocal theme songs up until Kiss me goodbye of FFXII. I just thought its use in FFXII was so ill placed, it almost ruined the ending for me.
I may be in the minority but I loved Eyes on Me, Melodies of Life, and Suteki da ne. I mean the timing of Suteki da ne was absolutely perfect and I really enjoyed the use of its theme throughout the game.
But I'm probably biased because I'm of the opinion that the music of final fantasy kind of went down hill after FFX. Although FFXIII did have a great soundtrack it still wasn’t of the same caliber.
i think i would choose "Far Away" from "Nickelback"
Nickelback is easily the worst band in the history of bands, so I would have to strongly disagree with you. And not only is the song itself horrible, but it definitely does not fit any Final Fantasy title.
Spoiler:
Unless you're making an equally shitty AMV, that is.

I couldn't agree more, Nickelback is the scourge of the earth and Chad Kroger or whatever his name is is the ugliest son of a cunt to sully this world/burn my retinas.
words can't describe my hate for Nickelback, but I'll leave this video as a token of the least I would like to do to them.
I figured suggesting an artist with theme song experience in a Japanese media industry, having decent vocal range and almost 20 years of professional singing experience was a far better course of action than, say, some song I enjoy personally and audaciously assume would be suitable. I'm not about to presume the tone of the game based on, what, two incredibly similar interviews and 40 seconds of new footage and so suggest a song to comprise part of its promotional image.

If Leona Lewis is going to be in charge of providing the main theme song- than I want something similar to her rendition of "Run". That song is amazing, just listen from 3:18 onwards. IT GAVE ME CHILLS
I actually imagined this song playing in the ending of FFXIII, in the final seconds where vanille and fang are shown...
