Seriously WHAT IS the big deal with console loyalty + wars?
I own the following consoles: Nintendo DS, GameBoy Advance, PSP, PSone, PS2, and in the past I have owned a GameCube, but I pawned it. The main reason I own these consoles is to play FF games and spinoffs. I will probably buy a PS3 in the future for FFXIII's release. I never owned Microsoft's XBOX consoles.
I am wondering what the hell is the big deal with console loyalty, fanboys, and console wars? I'm truly asking the question, because I really don't get it. I'm not what you would consider a fanboy, or console loyalist by any means. Some people are hardcore for Nintendo. Others are die hard for Sony. And the two camps hate each other like Palestinians versus Israelis. Me, I am a traitor to both camps because I double dip from both Nintendo and Sony.
I'm seriously asking this, what is the point of being a loyalist or a fanboy? Even the 15 or 16 year old kids who work part-time at a stupid grocery store for shit wages, could save up enough money over time, to buy both a 360 and a PS3 and get both versions of FFXIII, with probably a month's wages.
What I think really happens is, the kid makes a decision to buy one console, and then has to stick with it because he keeps buying games for that console. So you bought an XBOX, you keep buying your games for XBOX, and you wish they made Final Fantasy for the XBOX. You really hate having to buy a whole 'nother console just to play one game that is released on that console.
All over the internet, you see wars between XBOX and PS3 loyalists. And this big discussion about how the 360 results in a downgrade to the PS3 version. Whatever, I really don't care about minute graphical differences between builds.
And then there are people like me, who don't buy many games to build an extensive library or collection, but just buy a PSP for Crisis Core + Dissidia.
I guess there's this kind of stigma that, once you buy a console, you are somehow "obligated" to buy a whole bunch of games and UMD movies for it, or something. No you're not. No one is forcing you to "stick with the brand" and stay some kind of bitchy loyalist who hates other people who have a different console. Just because you bought a console, doesn't necessarily mean you have to fill it up with a shitload of media to "make the most of it," do you? Is that what people are trying to do? Make the most of their console purchase by buying a bunch of games and movies?
So I'm asking, what's the story? Why is there always a war between players of Nintendo vs. Sony vs. Microsoft?

human nature to be stupid. the majority of fanboys are too blinded and ignorant to realize that EVERY console is great. they each offer something the other doesn't, like the exclusive titles. right now i own a wii and 360 and love them both. why the wii? because i'm a long time fan of their games (zelda, mario, smash). why the 360? because when i bought mine, spring 08, there where rpgs on it that i wanted to play. eternal sonata and lost odyssey.
do i limit myself to just "long time favorites" and "rpgs"? hell no, i buy whatever i think is good. luckily i work at blockbuster so i can rent a shit load of games for free. i've definitely gotten my moneys worth so far. come spring 2010, i'm buying the ps3 when ff13 comes out. that's been my goal for months and i'm sticking to it. and it's 100% assured that i'll be buying a shit load of other games on there too. (uncharted, gow3, ratchet, blah blah blah).
anyway, point i'm trying to make is, don't bother with stupid shit like fanboyism and console wars. sure, everyone's entitled to a favorite (mine is the ps3), but heckling at the others makes you look like an idiot.
It's down to 'loyalty' and ones own personal preferences.
If they feel the need to justify their console then so be it, but it doesn't really matter as along as they are happy with what they bought.
But I bought my consoles for it's main purpose, to play games, I don't care what games, as long as they appeal to me; I could also never buy a console just to play one game, It's a terrible waste of £249 just to play a £40 game when there is so much more to offer and you don't even realise it.
I've bought a 360, gone through 2 of them until I came to my tether and burnt it to a beautiful crisp like it so desired, then I moved onto a PS3, and it's been smooth sailing so far, but I defiantly prefer my PC over any console, It's the super daddy of the group, always updating, always getting better.
Unlike a console which sits at the same state for a few years until they have to be updated due to the changes in the software and graphics.
Yep, we're tribal creatures, and seeing as each tribe is forming around an item that will cease to exist if it fails to be competitive against the others, it's a fight for the survival OF the tribe.

Definitely agree with this.
There's only about two games I want on 360, but then I keep in mind that I could just buy one of them for my laptop and that just leaves one left. Not really worth it in the long run. There used to be a few more games that I wanted, but they're all getting the fancy port treatment, so...
Fanboys
A fanboy, is someone that is naive. How exactly you may ask? Well, most fanboys would say that: The PlayStation 3, has no games. Pay attention now to that sentence ''No Games''. If a person goes around saying that with no Idea what games the PS3 has, is Ignorant.
Or if someone goes around saying that, can also speak from preferences. But the Irony is, if some PS3 exlusive games would had been on the 360 as well, the fanboys would had bought it as well.
Also, a fanboy can also be stupid, naive, Ignorant, stubborn & young. Like if someone else says that Uncharted 2 has way better graphics than Gears of War II, that fanboy wont admit it, and go on bitching.
Fact0rs.
Someone who compares each consoles alongside with facts, are right. They speak from the knowledge that they've learned from all consoles.
If a fanboy would discuss consoles with knowledge, that fanboy would get pissed off, curse, type in caps, backing up with big numbers. So that fanboy would say the Wii is the best, because iit has sold the most.
The Preferers
If someone buys a consoe just because of one or two particulary games(FF, KH, god of war, are sometime considered a fanboy. But prefers also lack some knowledge, and wont listen to the Fact0rs if they try to convince the Prefers to buy that console instead.
However, the prefers consist mostly of newbies, & family. They don't care about the console war, as longest they have fun.
However, these people tend to move over to the Fanboy's side.

Thats pretty much it in a nutshell. Plus, add on the fact that the internet lets you bash other people viewpoints anytime without any reprecussions and you have quite the volatile mix.
I personally don't care what people think about the PS3 or the 360. I like them both in certain aspects.
I think it will eventually go away, especially because there is such an increase year after year of gamers. You might even see another company try their hand at a system. You will soon see exclusivity abandoned in order to try to get the widest audiences for games that are costing more and more to make. Hope that helps!

They won't do that, they have the App store. Plus, Macs ship with intel cores now, so big companies like Blizzard can release their new games on the platform.
Yeah, I would chalk it up, for the most part, to the need to defend our purchase. It's like a human psychological thing, so it's not really by choice.
But besides that, I have to say that the more popular consoles do get more games. No one wants what happened to the Dreamcast to happen to their console, though I guess none of the current-gen is in danger of disappearing.
Also, from what I see, exclusives tend to be of a higher gaming quality than multiplatform titles, due to the care in fine-tuning it to a certain platform. I think the reason that people were upset with FFXIII on the XBOX is because of the fear that the overall quality of the game will be sacrificed in order to have it available to more people. I make no stance on how real that fear may be, but I must say that I feel it too.
